Includes a diary, 1869-1882, of Taft's notes from a trip to England and Europe, with listings of travel expenses, wages and earnings. While primarily about visits to museums, churches, gardens, etc., the diary also mentions visits to factories in Huddersfield and Sheffield, England. Also includes a diary, 1887-1888, with more detailed notes about visits to textile machine shops and factories in Oldham, Huddersfield, and Manchester, England. Accompanied by a transcript of excerpts from the diary of 1887-1888 and a listing of patents held by Taft, plus a copy of a portrait of Taft.

Taft was superintendent and agent for the Whitin Machine Works, textile machinery manufacturers in Whitinsville, Mass., 1864-1888. He also served on the Board of Directors, 1870-1887. He is credited with implementing changes to almost the whole Whitin line of products through modification, adaptation, and experimentation.
